What are the uses and functions of supercapacitors?

Supercapacitors have a wide range of applications. In applications that require high reliability but low energy requirements, supercapacitors can be used to replace traditional batteries. Supercapacitors can also be combined with batteries for applications that require high energy, and smaller and more economical batteries can be used. Let's take a detailed look at the uses and functions of supercapacitors.

The use of supercapacitors

Supercapacitors are a type of capacitor that is a storage device capable of storing and releasing electricity. Like ordinary capacitors, supercapacitors are installed in circuits to assist power sources such as batteries and batteries in various forms. The uses of supercapacitors are as follows:

1. Backup power supply with small current supply for clock chips, static random access memory, data transmission systems, etc. for tax control machines, tax controlled fuel dispensers, vacuum switches, smart meters, remote meter reading systems, instruments and meters, digital cameras, handheld computers, electronic door locks, program-controlled switches, cordless phones, etc.

2. Smart meters (smart meters, smart water meters, smart gas meters, smart heat meters) serve as the starting power source for solenoid valves;

3. Replace rechargeable batteries in solar powered products such as warning lights and navigation lights;

4. Replace rechargeable batteries in small charging products such as hand cranked electric flashlights;

5. The driving power supply for small power appliances such as electric toy motors, voice ICs, and LED lights.

6. Quick start of electric vehicles

7. Outdoor switch for power system grid renovation

8. Offshore wind turbines for wind power generation

The function of supercapacitors

A regular capacitor consists of two electrodes (metal plates) and a dielectric material sandwiched in between. Once a voltage is applied, electrons gather on an electrode and are in a state of stored charge. At this point, the dielectric between the electrodes increases the electrostatic capacity through the phenomenon of "dielectric polarization".

The specific details of the supercapacitor structure depend on the application and use of the supercapacitor. It is different from traditional chemical power sources, as it is a power source with special properties that lies between traditional capacitors and batteries. Due to manufacturers or specific application requirements, these materials may be slightly different. The commonality of all supercapacitors is that they all contain a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a separator between these two electrodes. The electrolyte fills the two pores separated by these two electrodes and the separator.

Supercapacitors, also known as double-layer capacitors, are a new type of energy storage device that have the characteristics of short charging time, long service life, good temperature characteristics, energy conservation, and green environmental protection
